Royalties are basically money that lands in your bank account while your songs are out there doing their thing in the background.
To be eligible in Australia, you simply need to register with APRA AMCOS and PPCA.
Once you’re registered, you can get paid when your songs are:
- Played live in public
- Broadcast on TV or radio
- Streamed online
- Performed by other artists
A lot of artists don’t realise that streaming royalties are actually two separate income streams. You get paid through your distributor and through royalty collections — so yes, you can double dip.
How it works
Every independent recording is split into two halves:
- The Song (Composition)
- The lyrics and melody.
- The Sound Recording (Master)
- The actual recorded version of the song.
In a traditional major label deal, the label often owns the sound recording, while the songwriter owns the composition. A publisher would usually handle the publishing royalties that APRA AMCOS collects.
But if you're running a DIY independent career, you're effectively wearing all the hats — artist, label, and publisher — which means you collect from multiple places.
Is it worth registering?
Absolutely.
For an artist playing around 100 original gigs a year, the APRA live performance returns alone can bring in roughly $500–$1000 annually.
If a song gets playlisted on ABC Country (or similar national radio), you might earn $1000–$1500 for that song from radio play.
For artists mainly getting spins on community radio and streaming platforms, you’ll often see smaller quarterly payments — sometimes under $100 — but they add up over time.
And the best part?
Once you're registered, the money comes in passively.
All you need to do is submit your live performance returns.
For many independent artists, that can easily mean an extra few thousand dollars a year — from songs doing their job while you're busy doing something else. 🎵
